Car battery in winter

Caring for your car battery in winter

How cold affects your battery

Low temperatures can reduce a battery's chemical capacity by 30–40%. At the same time, a cold engine demands more energy to crank because the oil is more viscous. This combination is the main reason many drivers in Pozuelo de Alarcon find themselves stranded in January and February, especially after several days without using their vehicle.

Signs of a weakened battery

Slow or laboured cranking, lights flickering when turning the key, unprovoked alarm beeps and an illuminated battery warning light are the most common indicators. A battery more than four or five years old has a high probability of failing mid-winter, even if it has performed well up to that point.

Tips to extend battery life

Avoid very short trips in winter: the alternator does not have enough time to replenish the energy consumed during startup. If the vehicle will sit unused for more than a week, disconnect the negative terminal or use a trickle charger. Switch off all electrical consumers before turning off the engine and always check that the lights are off.
