Vehicle braking system

Signs you need to change your brakes

Disc brakes: how they work and when they wear out

The braking system converts kinetic energy into heat through friction between pads and discs. With use, the pads gradually lose material until they reach their limit. At that point the disc begins to score and may ultimately require complete replacement, multiplying the cost of the repair.

Five symptoms you should not ignore

Watch out for these warning signs: a metallic squeal when braking (wear indicator touching the disc), vibration through the pedal or steering wheel under braking, a longer pedal travel before the vehicle stops, the car pulling to one side when braking, and a warning light on the instrument cluster. Any of these symptoms requires immediate inspection.

How often to inspect your braking system

As a general rule, pads should be inspected every 20,000 km and typically last 30,000–50,000 km depending on driving style. Discs have a longer service life but should be inspected at the same time. Brake fluid should be replaced every two years regardless of mileage.
