Preparing a car for a long journey

Checklist: preparing your car for a long trip

Fluids and levels: the foundation of everything

Before any long trip, check the engine oil level, coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid and windscreen washer reservoir. A low coolant level can cause engine overheating at motorway speeds with serious consequences. Spend ten minutes on this check and avoid unwanted stops along the way.

Tyres, brakes and lights

Check the pressure on all four tyres plus the spare. Verify that position lights, dipped and main beam headlights, brake lights and number plate lights all work correctly; in many European countries it is compulsory to carry a spare bulb kit. Press the brake firmly and confirm the vehicle stops in a straight line without pulling to either side.

Documents and safety equipment

Always carry your vehicle registration, insurance certificate, driving licence and, when travelling abroad, international insurance documentation. Check that warning triangles are in good condition, that you have a high-visibility vest within reach (not in the boot) and that any fire extinguisher has not expired. In case of breakdown you will be able to act safely.
